Hagood Mill Historic Site and Folklife Center
Originally constructed in 1826, and rebuilt in 1845, the Hagood Mill is one of the oldest gristmills in South Carolina that still produces grain products. Utilizing the waters of Hagood Creek (a tributary of the Twelve Mile River), the mill is powered by a 20-foot-diameter wooden wheel and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the mill, the site features several other historically significant attractions: the Murphree-Hollingsworth Log Cabin (circa 1790), the Hagood Family Home (circa 1825), and a restored 19th-century cotton ginning operation. A forthcoming Rock Art Interpretative Center will feature recently discovered mill site petroglyphs. Call ahead for information about festivals (especially in the fall), which draw crowds for traditional music, living history exhibits, and storytelling.
