Isaac Hayne Burial Site

Revolutionary War
The Isaac Hayne Burial Site tells the story of a tragic episode of the American Revolution. In the old plantation cemetery of the Hayne family lie the remains of Colonel Isaac Hayne, a Revolutionary War patriot executed by the British. A prominent local leader in the fight for independence, Isaac Hayne tried to live in peace at his plantation after the fall of Charleston in 1780, but the British rejected his attempt to remain neutral and forced him to declare allegiance in the Crown. Hayne eventually returned to the fight against the British but was captured and hanged as a brutal example to others. Isaac Hayne’s story reveals the grim nature of the Revolution in South Carolina, where men were often forced to switch sides and where commitment to one’s cause could end in death. The South Carolina State Park Service preserves and interprets the Isaac Hayne Burial Site.
