Colleton State Park

Heritage Corridor Site

Colleton State Park overlooks the scenic Edisto River , one of the longest free-flowing black water rivers in America .  The park was built by the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression as a wayside for picnicking travelers along U.S. 15.

The park features a number of trails to include the Cypress Swamp Trail, a half-mile interpretive nature trail that can be accessed from the trailhead at the post and rail fence.  Pick up a self-guided nature brochure for this short, level, easy walking, loop trail.  Numbered signs will help you identify a variety of trees and plants.  You can follow the canoe launch boardwalk spur trail to the dark water of the Edisto River .  Watch for a variety of birds, deer, turtles, snakes and other wildlife.
