Branchville Railroad Junction & Museum

Heritage Corridor Site

Branchville was a stop on the South Carolina Railroad and Canal’s Charleston to Hamburg rail line. When completed in 1833, it was the longest railroad in the world with the first scheduled train service. In 1842 a new rail line was completed to Columbia making Branchville the first rail junction in the world. The present depot was completed in 1907 and serves today as a railroad museum. Although largely destroyed by fire in 1995, the building and museum have been restored and a restaurant is also on site.
