Camp Calhoun 2008

August 18, 2008 Posted in What's New

Nearly 100 campers 'got connected' during the fourth annual Camp Calhoun 2008. With participants from Aiken, Saluda, Barnwell, Edgefield and Blackville, these campers had a two day island adventure while visiting the Rivers, Rails and Crossroads Discovery Center in Blackville and the Freshwater Coast Discovery Center in Edgefield.

These adventures consisted of live performances from Aunt Pearlie Sue on Gullah heritage, Nakia Wigfall on sweetgrass basketry and the Abatsu African Performing Arts Group on African attire and music. These performances gave great insight on the rich and cultural connections between South Carolina and Barbados, trailing the huge success of The Connection project hosted by the SCNHC. Other activities included: African mask making, African trade bead making, face painting, quilting and so much more! Packages included an official Camp Calhoun t-shirt, lunch, snacks and activities.

Many thanks are sent to the Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce, Edgefield County School District, the SCNHC Region 2 Board, and Blackville-Hilda Public Schools for being proud sponsors of this year's camp.
